GARY NUMAN - ANDROID IN LA LA LAND
Cert 15
85 mins
BBFC advice: Contains strong language
Mrs W, Master W, Miss W and myself had an epic weekend in Scotland but we were all partied out and in chilling mode.
So, on our final night I found a bit of personal space in our excellent apartment in Glasgow and settled down to a bit of nostalgia.
Gary Numan was a significant part of my youth. At first, my friends and I loved him and then, when he seemed to go a bit crazy, we distanced ourselves.
Now, he is back with a critically acclaimed album and here Steve Read and Rob Alexander find out what happened to our friend electric.
In recent years, after an estrangement from his parents, Numan moved, with his wife Gemma and three young daughters to California where he was taking his last shot at returning to the big time.
But, as frank interviews with the whole family reveal, Numan's life and, consequently, his career have been far from straightforward.
He is open about his diagnosis with Asperger's Syndrome which explains significant quirks in his character.
And he is also unstinting in his praise for his wife who he believes has not only kept him grounded but has even saved his life.
There are flashbacks to the days when he made his name with the background story to how and why he created his unique style and then Numan and Gemma fill in the gaps with stories of highs and lows.
Over the years, Numan has gone from a figure of fun to now being seen as a pioneer of electronic music.
He is devoted to his family and his art but also recognises that he is not the easiest person to live and work with.
However, he has a deep desire for success and his latest album proves that he wasn't being as delusional as might have first appeared.
Numan fans will love this movie but so will those who are interested in music history because Numan is very much part of it.
Reasons to watch: a frank insight into a rock pioneer
Reasons to avoid: its conclusion is a bit to easy
Laughs: none
Jumps: none
Vomit: none
Nudity: none
Overall rating: 7.5/10
